When Triggers Take Over
Core Wounds, Core Fears, and the Survival Brain in Relationships
In intimate relationships, some moments feel bigger than the moment itself.
A partner looks away.
A tone shifts.
A text goes unanswered.
Suddenly, your body reacts before your mind can catch up. Your heart races, your chest tightens, and your thoughts narrow. You may feel overwhelmed, defensive, desperate, or shut down. Later, you might think, “Why did I react like that?”
These moments are often described as triggers—and they are not signs of weakness or immaturity. They are signs that your nervous system has detected a threat to attachment safety.
What a Trigger Really Is (From a Trauma-Informed Perspective)
A trigger occurs when a present-day relational cue activates an unresolved attachment wound, causing the nervous system to respond as though an earlier injury is happening again. It can also subconsciously resurface a ‘healed’ one when our window of tolerance is low, or we are depleted.
This process is:
- Fast (milliseconds, not minutes)
- Implicit (outside conscious awareness)
- Somatically driven (felt in the body before it’s understood in the mind)
Current attachment research confirms that when attachment security is threatened, emotional responses intensify and regulation becomes more difficult—especially in close, emotionally significant relationships (Chin et al., 2024; BMC Psychology, 2024).
Core Wounds and Core Fears: The Hidden Layer Beneath Triggers
Core Wounds
Core wounds are relational injuries formed through early caregiving experiences or later attachment trauma (such as betrayal, chronic emotional unavailability, or relational instability).
They shape deeply held expectations like:
- “I will be left.”
- “I am not enough.”
- “My needs overwhelm others.”
- “Closeness leads to pain.”
These wounds are not stored only as beliefs—they are encoded in emotion, physiology, and memory networks.
Core Fears
When a core wound is activated, it gives rise to a core fear, such as:
- “I’m about to lose this relationship.”
- “I’m unsafe.”
- “I’m powerless.”
- “I’m alone.”
To the nervous system, these fears feel immediate and real, regardless of what the present-day facts say.
When the Survival Brain Takes Over
When a trigger is activated, control shifts from reflective thinking to subcortical survival systems.
Neuroscience research on attachment and threat processing shows that:
- The brain prioritizes speed over accuracy
- The prefrontal cortex (reasoning, empathy, perspective-taking) becomes less accessible
- The amygdala and autonomic nervous system drive behavior
This is often described as the “reptilian” or survival brain taking charge—but more precisely, it is the nervous system doing exactly what it evolved to do: protect attachment and survival (Izaki et al., 2024).
In this state, people may move into:
- Fight – anger, criticism, and control
- Flight – withdrawal and avoidance
- Freeze – shutdown and numbness
- Appease (Fawn) – over-functioning and self-abandonment
These are not conscious choices. They are protective responses.
Why Triggers Are Strongest With Romantic Partners
Romantic partners are primary attachment figures. Research consistently shows that attachment figures have a unique capacity to regulate—or dysregulate—the nervous system.
Because these relationships matter deeply:
- Small cues carry large emotional meaning
- Ruptures feel existential, not just upsetting
- The nervous system treats attachment threat as a survival threat
This is why people often say, “I don’t react this way with anyone else.” It’s not because the relationship is unhealthy—it’s because it matters.
Triggered Responses Are Adaptive, Not Pathological
From a trauma-informed lens, triggered responses are learned survival strategies that once helped someone stay connected, safe, or intact.
The problem isn’t the response itself—it’s that the context has changed while the nervous system hasn’t fully updated yet.
Contemporary trauma research emphasizes that healing occurs not through insight alone, but through experiences of safety, regulation, and relational repair that gradually recalibrate threat systems (Torres-Berrío et al., 2025).
Moving Toward Regulation and Repair
Effective work with triggers focuses on:
- Stabilizing physiological arousal
- Restoring nervous-system regulation
- Identifying the core fear beneath the reaction
- Repairing attachment ruptures with pacing and consent
- Widening and/or being aware of window of tolerance
Relational neuroscience research also highlights the importance of social buffering—the ability of attuned relationships to calm threat responses and reduce stress activation over time (Biological Psychiatry: CNNI, 2024).
Over time, the nervous system can learn:
“This moment is intense, but I am not in danger.”
A Reframe That Supports Healing
Being triggered does not mean:
- You are broken
- You are “too sensitive.”
- Your relationship is failing
It means:
- An attachment wound is being activated
- Your nervous system is seeking protection
- Something important is asking for care
With support, regulation, and relational repair, triggers can become pathways to deeper safety and connection, rather than sources of shame.
