Window Of Tolerance
The Window of Tolerance (WoT) is a practical, neuroscience-informed framework widely used in trauma-informed therapy to explain how the nervous system regulates emotional and physiological arousal. Originally introduced by psychiatrist Dr. Dan Siegel, the model helps us understand why stress can feel manageable at times and overwhelming or numbing at others.
What Is the Window of Tolerance?
The Window of Tolerance refers to a range of physiological and emotional arousal in which individuals can stay calm, think clearly, connect with others, and respond adaptively to life’s challenges. Within this window, we are typically able to process thoughts and feelings without becoming overwhelmed or shutting down.
When stressors push someone outside this window, the nervous system shifts into survival states:
- Hyperarousal (above the window): Fight-or-flight responses, anxiety, panic, agitation, or emotional overwhelm.
- Hypoarousal (below the window): Freeze/shutdown responses, numbness, disconnection, depression, fatigue.

These states represent adaptive survival mechanisms that persist when the nervous system is dysregulated, especially after trauma.
Neurobiological Foundations
Although the term “window” is metaphorical, its core reflects long-standing neuroscience findings:
- Autonomic nervous system dynamics: Trauma and chronic stress can dysregulate the balance between sympathetic (fight/flight) and parasympathetic (rest/digest/freeze) systems, resulting in sudden shifts in arousal that mirror being outside one’s window of tolerance.
- Brain connectivity: Chronic stress and trauma can weaken prefrontal regulation of emotional centers like the amygdala, reducing the ability to manage responses to perceived threats—a dynamic central to understanding why some have narrower windows.
- Adaptive survival states: The window concept aligns with the nervous system’s prioritization of survival over cognitive processing during threat, drawing on midbrain and brainstem circuits rather than reflective prefrontal networks.
Important Note: While the Window of Tolerance model is widely used in clinical settings and trauma training, direct experimental validation of the window metaphor is limited; its strength lies in translating neurobiology into usable clinical understanding rather than serving as a discrete, laboratory-validated construct.
Why It Matters in Therapy
1. Helps us to better understand ourselves and another person’s experience
The model validates what many of us feel but struggle to articulate: sometimes stress feels too much (overwhelm) and other times too little (numbness), even when external conditions haven’t changed. Labeling these states helps normalize experience and reduce shame or self-blame.
2. Guides Session Pacing and Interventions
Therapists use the Window of Tolerance to:
- Monitor arousal levels during trauma work or emotion regulation exercises.
- Adjust therapeutic pace so that clients remain within or just at the edge of their tolerable range.
- Introduce regulation skills when signs of dysregulation appear.
Being aware of that window enhances engagement, promotes safety, and supports deeper processing when appropriate.
Expanding the Window of Tolerance
The Window of Tolerance isn’t static; it can be widened over time through clinical work, regulation practices, and supportive environments. Evidence-informed strategies include:
- Psychoeducation: Knowing about nervous system responses and the WoT framework fosters self-awareness.
- Mindfulness and grounding: These practices help regulate autonomic arousal and foster re-entry into the window when dysregulated.
- Therapeutic safety and co-regulation: Consistent, attuned therapeutic relationships provide corrective experiences that strengthen regulatory capacity.
- Skill training: Emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and breathing exercises help modulate physiological responses.
Clinical Implications and Cautions
Application across diagnoses: The Window of Tolerance is useful across trauma, anxiety, depression, personality disorders, and chronic stress conditions. It provides a common language for understanding emotional regulation challenges.
Not a diagnostic tool: The model is a framework, not a clinical diagnosis or standardized measure. Its value lies in guiding therapeutic understanding and interventions rather than defining pathology.
